The Role of a Ductless Mini Split
It’s not the high temperatures of the summer months that really get to people. High temperatures mean nothing until it’s paired with humidity for the real “feels like” temperature. When the two are compiled together, it can make for some pretty hot days that can only be escaped by going for a swim, eating a big bowl of ice cream, or heading into an air-conditioned home or building. But what if that wasn’t an option? What if someone went inside to cool off only to find that the AC was malfunctioning and it was just as hot and humid inside as it was outside?
What is a Ductless Mini Split
A ductless mini split works essentially the same way as a regular, central air conditioning system but without the ducts. It still draws warm air from inside the home, absorbs that heat and moisture in the air, sends it outside, cools it, and then sends the cool air back inside. But the main difference between a ductless mini split AC system and a central AC system lies in how they deliver that cool air.
Central AC systems blow cold air into a network of air ducts, which then distribute the cold air throughout the home. Ductless AC systems, on the other hand, blow the cold air directly into the room where it’s located.
Homeowners will likely run into the same challenges and issues no matter which AC system they choose, minus any ductwork issues. Therefore, technicians would use the same tools, technologies, and methods for fixing a ductless system: no extra needs required!
Ductless Air Conditioner Benefits
There are several benefits of having a ductless AC system, which is why they are quite popular among homeowners.
- Ductless AC systems have built-in zoning. Each room’s temperature can be controlled individually. So if one person in the house is always cold, they can increase the temperature in their room without impacting the comfort of everyone else.
- The average home loses 20-30% of conditioned air through duct leaks. Ductless systems are more energy (and financially) efficient because homeowners don’t have to worry about these leaks occurring.
- For older homes that don’t have ductwork, they are a great option because the cost of installing ductwork for a central AC system can be quite expensive!
The main thing people don’t like about ductless systems is that they aren’t aesthetically pleasing. They are sleeker than a window AC unit, but they still can take up a large space on the wall and are hard to hide.
AC Maintenance for Ductless Systems
As mentioned, most of the ductless system is identical to a central AC system. They have many of the same parts and components. But ductless systems have one big piece that doesn’t have to be maintained: the ducts! Ducts can have leaks and damage over time, so not having to worry about this maintenance is a big advantage to homeowners. To properly maintain a ductless system, homeowners should regularly inspect the device for any leaks, damage, or erosion so that the components can be replaced before larger issues take place.
