Signs of a Dreaded Water Leak

How to Detect Water Leaks

Not every water leak in the home is easy to spot. Severe leaks that cause visible water damage, mold, mildew, and puddles on the floor are easy to spot, but other types of leaks are harder to spot. These are often smaller or hidden away in places homeowners don’t commonly see. But it doesn’t mean these leaks can cause any less damage. If they’re allowed to go on without being fixed, they can cause immense damage to the home. That’s why it’s important to know the signs of a leak. Luckily, there are a few different ways to spot these hidden leaks. Read on to find out what they are.

Mysterious Sounds of Running Water or Hissing

One of the easiest ways to identify a hidden leak is through hearing. The sounds of running water or hissing can indicate a leak. Dripping is another sound to watch out for. It’s important to ensure the plumbing isn’t in use when listening for these sounds because if someone is using water somewhere in the house, that could account for them.

After hearing a hissing, dripping,  or running water and verifying that it’s not regular plumbing usage, it’s important to determine where the sounds are coming from. That is when it’s a good idea to call a plumbing professional to have them locate and fix any leaks in the plumbing.

Poor Water Pressurewater

Another telltale sign of a water leak is low water pressure. Common water pressure for a home is somewhere between 40 PSI and 60 PSI. But when there’s a leak somewhere in the plumbing system, that pressure will drop. Sometimes, the drop can be minor. Other times, it can be quite drastic. It depends on the size of the leak or how many there are.

Like listening to the sounds of a leak, it’s important to ensure nobody else is using the water when checking water pressure. When another plumbing fixture in the house is being used, it can affect water pressure in other parts of the house. But if there’s low water pressure when no one else is using the plumbing, it could mean a leak somewhere in the system.

High Water Bills

Lastly, higher than normal water bills are a good indication that there’s a leak in the house. This is particularly true if a household’s water usage has remained the same, but the bills are increasing. Homeowners can use the home’s water meter to help confirm a leak in the system.

Mysteriously high water bills are never good. Even if there is no leak, it’s worth digging into why the bill has increased so much. Chances are something is going on with the plumbing. And if it is a leak, there’s likely water damage somewhere in the house. The sooner that damage is stopped, the less expensive it will be to repair.

Luckily, homeowners who think they have a leak can contact a professional plumbing company for leak detection. A plumber can check the system and pinpoint the leak with their specialized leak detection equipment, then quickly fix the issue before it causes big problems.
